how I sandwich a quilt and a happy accident

Today I finished sandwiching my log cabin quilt top pieced using the strip piecing method.

Here are the simple steps I follow to prepare the quilt for the actual quilting.  This is the part of quilting that I enjoy the least but is really very important.  In fact, if a quilt is not sandwiched properly, one could easily see the hours of precise cutting, piecing and matching points go to waste when the quilt bunches and stretches during quilting.  (please do not ask how I know this - lets just say I've learned much through trial and error.) 

Step 1.  Measure your completed quilt top and piece the quilt back to be 4-6 inches wider and longer than the quilt top.   This is important as the top tends to shift a bit during quilting.

Step 2.  Place the quilt back on the floor wrong side up and tape it to the floor using blue painters tape.  Pull it snug so that there are no wrinkles and the fabric lays flat but do not stretch it.  This keeps the layers flat and taught during pinning and will serve to eliminate puckers that can form on the back during quilting.

Step 3.  Cut the batting the same size as the quilt back (4-6 inches larger than the quilt top)  and place it on top of the quilt back.  I use warm and natural cotton batting that I buy at Joann's using the 40% off coupon - I have found it to be the best batting available.

EDITED TO ADD:  It has been brought to my attention that I neglected to mention that I use warm and natural batting that is 90" wide - this way I do not need to piece the batting.  Batting can easily be pieced using a wide zig-zag stitch.  The batting also comes in 34"  and 45"  widths if you are working on smaller projects.  This quilt measures 65" x 72". Thanks Lisa.

Step 4. Place the quilt top on the batting right side up.

Step 5.  Pin all the layers together, placing the pins about 6 inches apart.  I use these little curved pins made especially for sandwiching quilts because they are easier to close when the quilt is taped to the floor.

Here is the quilt all pinned.

Step 6.  Remove all the blue tape and, using scissors, cut around the perimeter of the quilt leaving two inches of extra backing and batting all around the quilt top.

All sandwiched and awaiting quilting!

As for that happy accident....

Today we discovered this gigantic cucumber in the garden that we had apparently overlooked for ... let's just say - a very long time.  It was 10 inches long and 5 inches in diameter!  That was the 'accident' part.  I say was because the 'happy' part came when we got to watch our guinea pigs eat it.

Once we put then in their enclosure they ate the whole thing!
